"Hidden Gems in HTM: Exploring the Booming Dental Equipment Repair Industry"

I’ve dedicated myself to raising awareness about the Healthcare Technology Management Industry (HTM), an essential field that too few people know about. Recently, I realized there’s an even lesser known sector, dental repair—that’s flying completely under the radar. While it could certainly fall under the HTM umbrella, the first step is making sure people know it exists at all.

In my latest episode of the HTM On The Line podcast, I had the honor of sitting down with three extraordinary leaders who are revolutionizing the dental equipment repair industry. Oscar Gutierrez, Bill Bassuk, and Matthew Lau. These men are not just making strides—they're redefining what it means to succeed in a industry that many in the biomed community often overlook. Their journeys, filled with perseverance, innovation, and a clear vision for the future, provide a blueprint for anyone eager to elevate their career.

Oscar Gutierrez l

Oscar Gutierrez: Building a Legacy

Oscar Gutierrez’s journey in the dental industry began over 15 years ago. He started small, working for a local company that eventually expanded and was sold, paving the way for his role at Patterson Dental. But Oscar’s ambitions went beyond working for others. Five years ago, he ventured out on his own and started a dental equipment repair company. Today, he leads a team of 25 technicians, serving most of Texas and working with numerous DSOs. Oscar’s story is a powerful example of the impact of vision and hard work. He’s not just building a business—he’s building a legacy. “I’m trying to build something that goes for generations,” Oscar shared. His success over just five years is an example for anyone considering a similar path.

Matthew Lau

Matthew Lau: The Power of Reinvention

Matthew Lau’s career is a testament to reinvention and adaptability. After 22 years as a biomed in the United States Air Force, Matthew transitioned to the private sector, enhancing the training program for franchisees at Dental Fix. He later bought a franchise, sold it, and partnered with a friend in a biomed company focused on government contracts. But when the pandemic hit, Matthew faced a pivotal moment. That’s when UptimeServices approached him with an opportunity to create a new system in the dental world—one that mirrored the efficiency of the biomed industry. Now, as a Senior Operations Manager at UptimeServices and a collaborator with College of Biomedical Equipment Technology, Matthew is helping to establish an accredited, certified dental equipment repair program. “I couldn’t be more excited about this next chapter,” Matthew said. His story emphasizes the importance of embracing change and seizing opportunities to innovate and lead.

Bill Bassuk

Bill Bassuk: Transforming the Industry

Bill Bassuk has been a cornerstone in the HTM industry for years. After starting in specialized and laboratory equipment, Bill transitioned to biomed and eventually founded CER Technology, a service repair company. But Bill didn’t stop there. He founded the College of Biomedical Equipment Technology and later partnered with UptimeServices to start Root Dental, a company that bridges the gap between medical and dental service repair.

Bill’s focus is on transforming the dental repair industry from a reactive model to a proactive one, saving dentists money and ensuring patient safety. “The dental field is not regulated like biomed, but that’s where we come in,” Bill explained. His vision for the future is one of collaboration, education, and raising standards across the board.

The Untapped Potential of Dental Repair

Why should biomeds consider the dental industry? The answer is simple: opportunity. The dental repair field is less stressful, more lucrative, and ripe with potential. With new dental offices opening daily, the demand for skilled technicians is higher than ever.

Oscar, Matthew, and Bill all stressed that now is the time to get involved. Whether you’re looking to start your own business or simply want to expand your skill set, the dental industry offers a wealth of opportunities. And it’s not just about financial gain—it’s about making a lasting impact in an often-overlooked industry.

A Call to Action

As our conversation wrapped up, I asked each guest to share a final message with the biomeds listening. Their responses were both powerful and inspiring.

Bill urged biomeds to recognize the potential in dental repair. “It’s a lot of fun, it’s exciting, and it’s challenging,” he said. “But most importantly, it’s an opportunity to fix not just the equipment, but the mindset of the industry.”

Oscar highlighted the rewards of building a successful dental repair business. “If you put in the hard work, it will pay off,” he emphasized.

Matthew, always the visionary, encouraged biomeds to think about their future and the impact they can have by joining this growing field. “This is an easy industry to get into, and you can make a lot of money,” he noted. “But at the end of the day, it’s not just about the money—it’s about taking care of the customer.”

The message is clear: the dental repair industry is an untapped goldmine of opportunity. If you’re a biomed looking for your next challenge, this could be it. The time to act is now. Whether you’re ready to start your own business or simply want to expand your skills, the dental repair industry is waiting for you.
